Breeding New Premium Quality Cultivars by Citrus Breeding 2.0 in Japan: An Integrative Approach Suggested by Genealogy

چکیده

Developing varieties with diverse features that satisfy varied commercial needs, improving overall fruit quality, and quickly releasing them, are prerequisites in citrus breeding. However, these three goals require trade-offs conventional breeding, even the application of marker-assisted selection technique. Conventional breeding cannot achieve simultaneously it has been regarded as a trilemma. Integrating genomics-assisted (GAB) approach relies on quantitative trait locus detection by genome-wide association study prediction genomic using enriched marker genotypes enhances efficiency contributes to eliminating Besides efforts, analysis genealogy indigenous revealed many high-quality were selected within few generations. It suggested selecting new premium quality hybrid is possible integrating GAB technique helps avoid This review describes how approach, “Citrus Breeding 2.0” works for rapidly developing new, hybrids introduces applications this technique, specifically, rebreeding, complementary mimic based ongoing program NARO, Japan.

Citrus breeding, genetics and genomics in Japan

Citrus is one of the most cultivated fruits in the world, and satsuma mandarin (Citrus unshiu Marc.) is a major cultivated citrus in Japan. Many excellent cultivars derived from satsuma mandarin have been released through the improvement of mandarins using a conventional breeding method. The citrus breeding program is a lengthy process owing to the long juvenility, and it is predicted that mark...

Participatory breeding, an approach for sustainable production of new rice cultivars in Iran

Over the past 50 years, thousands of rice varieties have been introduced by plant breeders to agricultural communities all over the world. Despite the improvement of attributes such as grain yield and tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses, a significant portion of farmers still prefer local varieties over the improved cultivars. The main reasons for this perference are the absence of a dire...

Genome wide selection in Citrus breeding.

Genome wide selection (GWS) is essential for the genetic improvement of perennial species such as Citrus because of its ability to increase gain per unit time and to enable the efficient selection of characteristics with low heritability. This study assessed GWS efficiency in a population of Citrus and compared it with selection based on phenotypic data. A total of 180 individual trees from a c...

Breeding by design.

Breeding by Design is a concept that aims to control all allelic variation for all genes of agronomic importance. This concept can be achieved through a combination of precise genetic mapping, high-resolution chromosome haplotyping and extensive phenotyping. Thanks to marker technology, software tools and the know-how available today, this goal can now be achieved. Depending on the crop-specifi...

Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) is the fifth important cereal crop after wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), maize (Zea mays L.), rice (Oryza sativa L.), and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) in the world. It is cultivated in about 46 million ha with a total production of 62 million t (FAO 1998). Asia and Africa account 86% of the total area under sorghum, but their contribution towards total product...
